Tube feeding

Tube feeding is prescribed if a patient cannot, is not allowed or does not want to eat enough.

What is tube feeding?
Tube feeding is liquid nutrition that is administered directly into the stomach or intestine through a flexible tube – the tube. Tube feeding contains all the nutrients you need every day, such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, water and usually fiber.
Tube feeding is intended to completely replace the normal daily diet, but in some cases it is recommended as a supplement to your normal diet.
To get enough nutrients, it is important to carefully follow the prescription you have been given.

Why tube feeding?
You will receive tube feeding if, for example, you cannot eat or cannot eat enough due to illness, surgery, medication or treatment. In most cases, the use of tube feeding ensures that you receive sufficient nutrition. A good nutritional status contributes to your fitness and resistance, but also to recovery after treatment.

Your doctor or dietician will determine which tube feeding, how much and for how long you should use tube feeding. This can vary from a few weeks to a number of months or even lifelong, depending on your situation.

When starting tube feeding, your gastrointestinal tract may take some time to get used to it. Any complaints are usually temporary. When changing the type/type of tube feeding, you also have to get used to it again.

Never stop or change the use of tube feeding on your own. Once you have become accustomed to your tube feeding, it is wise to continue this feeding at home and/or upon discharge from hospital as long as you are unable to eat enough yourself. If your medical condition allows it, it is possible to also start using normal oral nutrition.

Always contact your dietitian and/or treating doctor if there is a change.
