Metabolic diseases

Metabolic diseases are rare conditions that affect the body’s ability to break down certain nutrients.

Metabolic diseases are rare conditions caused by genetic abnormalities that affect the body’s ability to break down certain nutrients (e.g. amino acids). They are usually transmitted by both parents and are usually caused by abnormalities in enzymes that help break down (metabolize) food. Metabolic diseases are usually controlled by following a lifelong diet.

The role of nutrition
Metabolic disease can lead to a build-up of certain harmful substances that, if not controlled, can cause a range of symptoms including impairment in physical and mental development.

For example, people who suffer from the metabolic disease phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine, leading to a build-up of this amino acid in the brain. Such a buildup can cause long-term health problems, including irreversible brain damage.
Since amino acids such as phenylalanine are the building blocks of the proteins we eat, PKU patients should stick to a low-protein diet and take products containing the essential and non-essential amino acids that our bodies need to function properly.
