The term kidney disease is a collective name for various disorders of the kidneys. In all these conditions, kidney function deteriorates.

The kidneys have different functions: they produce hormones that are necessary for the production of red blood cells. They also ensure the correct calcium content of the bones and regulate blood pressure. The main function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and fluid from the blood. If this no longer works properly and the kidneys can no longer purify the blood properly, we call it renal insufficiency. Kidney failure can develop suddenly (acute) or slowly and gradually (chronic). In both cases, renal insufficiency affects almost all functions of the kidneys.

Kidney disease can be caused by a congenital defect, inflammation, kidney damage or as a result of high blood pressure or diabetes. Some kidney diseases heal again or can be treated effectively.

Complaints of kidney disease
If you have kidney disease, you may suffer from the following complaints:

  • Problems with fluid balance; This can cause fluid retention (such as swollen ankles or a swollen face). Dehydration (such as dry mouth and dry mucous membranes) is also possible.
  • Accumulation of waste products; This can cause complaints such as fatigue, itching, muscle cramps, forgetfulness, insomnia, nausea and reduced appetite.
  • Hormonal disorders; In kidney disease, some hormones are produced more and others less. This can lead to anemia and an increase in blood pressure or osteoporosis.

Kidney diseases and nutrition
A kidney patient is often given a diet. What that diet looks like differs per patient. An adapted diet helps to consume less waste products. That reduces the complaints. In addition, a diet can ensure that the kidneys deteriorate less (quickly). In some cases, an energy and protein-rich diet is necessary to improve nutritional status. Supplementing certain vitamins and minerals may also be necessary. A dietician puts together a diet. The amount of protein and minerals (sodium, potassium, phosphate) and water that may be consumed may change due to this diet.

Nutricia has medical nutritional drinks specifically for kidney patients. These are foods for medical use and are recommended by a doctor or dietician.
