Eosinophilic esophagitis is a chronic condition of the esophagus. It seems that this condition is occurring in more and more children. Food allergy is probably the main cause of EoE and it often goes hand in hand with reflux. When a large number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cells, infiltrate the esophagus, we speak of Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Symptoms often begin in infancy, but can also occur in toddlers (usually boys). These symptoms are very similar to those of reflux:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Passage complaints
  • Nausea after meals
  • Vomit
  • Abdominal pain and diarrhea
  • Stunted growth
  • Constipation (mainly in older children)

Studies have shown that nutritional therapy (elimination of allergens) has a high success rate. There are two ways:

  • An elemental diet , in which all sources of complete protein are omitted from the diet. This means that the doctor or dietician will prescribe food based on amino acids.
  • An elimination diet , in which all food allergens to which the child reacted during allergy testing are omitted or the child is required to avoid one or more of the top 8 food allergens in children (cow’s milk, soybeans, chicken eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, fish and shellfish). to avoid. To ensure that the child gets all the nutrients he or she needs, the doctor or dietician may prescribe an amino acid-based food to supplement the diet.
